MGL & Chosen : Disability representation done right
I'm always seeing able people as the main character and it gets tiring. I've always had this fantasy about how amazing it would be to see a physically disabled girl as the main character being shown like a normal effing person instead of some tired stereotype. As a girl who dates, who has friends, who is fashionable, funny, and lives her life as best she can. I wanted to see a movie or TV show where the disabled girl is shown like anyone else but at the same time shows her differences and what she has to deal with, I wanted a show where they accurately represent disabled people.
I found a couple refreshing examples.
The two main characters of the show chosen.
King Orr, the brother of one of the main characters.
Chosen: This struck a chord with me. I only saw the one episode the character King Orr was in but I heard they killed him off....Figures..... But the first episode I saw him in was amazing, King had what I'm assuming was Crohns or UC and he needed a colostomy bag, He was 16 and he couldn't work so he was at home playing video games, he was trying to find an alternate method of work that he could do despite his health issues. He had a funny and vulgar sense of humor and ohh not to mention extremely attractive. *cue drool*. When his brother came home from a party he asked "Did you bring me home some girls" (I changed that last part, too graphic for my taste) Which shows that he actually had sexual desires when PWD are usually shown as if we don’t desire romance let alone sex. At the end of the scene his stress from being sick was also shown, which is totally real. Disability doesn’t define us, we can joke about being sick and make the best of things but being sick is stressful.
to see that all jam packed in to a couple minutes was almost enough to induce tears of joy to see a chronically ill teen, still being a teenager but also having to deal with things like not being able to work was amazing.
I’m in LOVE with MGL Not only is it hilarious, its showing disabled people in a positive light that we have our differences but we are more alike than different. The main character Teal Sherer is paraplegic and is paraplegic in real life as well. Sadly I don't think they are filming anymore but the 9 or 10 episodes I watched filled my heart up enough, it was literally like watching most TV shows I’d seen except the main character was disabled. I'm definitely going to be on the hunt for more GOOD examples of disability whether they be indie or mainstream. I still have yet to watch speechless and I'm so mad at myself! It seems like they probably did it right as well.
